Purpose of the VIRM
The purpose of the Virtual Institute for Reference Materials is:
to improve the quality control of products and processes by encouraging, catalyzing and facilitating the increased use of reference materials throughout Europe and in the rest of the world in the environmental, food, industrial products, pharmaceutical and medical fields as well as in other similar scientific fields;
to be the main source of study and information about reference materials;
to offer advice and services related to reference materials to producers, distributors, potential users, service suppliers and to institutes of research, however labelled, in Europe and worldwide.
Acceptable Use Policy
Users of the VIRM website accept that they will not engage in any activity that violates a law or regulation (including but not limited to, libel, slander, invasion of privacy, harassment, obscenity, child pornography), and infringement or misuse of other party’s copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets or other intellectual property rights.
The information provided is intended for the use of VIRM members, both users and subscribers, and is intended as a service to users and providers of physical, chemical and other reference materials.
Only bona fide producers of these reference materials are invited to submit their products for listing, and form the basis of the searchable database. VIRM does not represent that the information is comprehensive, accurate or verified, whilst using its best endeavours to confirm this.
The information contained in this website has been prepared for the purpose of providing general information about Reference Materials and about the activities of VIRM.
The copyright in the material in this website belongs to VIRM. Any person may copy any part of this material, subject to the following conditions:
1. the material may only be used for non-commercial purposes;
2. the copies must retain any copyright or other intellectual property notices contained in the original material, and
3. the products, services or processes described in this website may be the subject of other intellectual property rights reserved by VIRM or by other third parties. No licence is granted in respect of these rights.
Retrieval of information
Access to the VIRM website is organised into 4 levels:
1. Registered Subscriber
Registered Subscribers have full access to the VIRM website. They can use all of its features and Services, like the various searchable databases. They can receive the electronic VIRM Newsletter, and can make use of all VIRM Help Desk services.
They are encouraged to submit new information.
Registered ‘Subscribers’ pay an annual subscription fee.
2. Registered User
Registered Users have access to a limited area of the VIRM website. They can use only a selection of its features (including e.g. the VIRM Newsletter, Library, Events, What’s New?). They can make only use of the Help Desk’s technical (web site related) services. They are encouraged to submit on-line new information.
Registered ‘Users’ pay no fee.
Everybody has access to the visitors area of the VIRM website and can sample few of its features, notably some searchable databases. ‘Visitors’ are not registered, cannot submit new information, get no electronic VIRM Newsletter and pay no fee.
4. Limited access
Level 4 access is limited to selected persons that have access to the areas concerned (e.g. selected Forums, Meeting Rooms, site administrators, Newsletter editor).
Supply of Information
Every VIRM registered user/subscriber is encouraged to supply information on line to the VIRM website. VIRM, as a virtual institute with a limited staff capacity (secretariat/help desk only), has neither the capacity nor the expertise to verify all input for correctness. However, all information is checked for completeness (were all obligatory fields filled?), and consistency (e.g. adaptation of keywords). In addition, all input is checked whether it is in line with the VIRM policy.
Acceptance of new information may take a few working days. VIRM reserves the right to edit the information submitted and to refuse entering the information on the website without argument.
The information contained in this web site, and its associated web sites, is provided as a service to the Internet community and to the reference materials scientific community. We try to provide quality information, but we make no claims, promises or guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, or adequacy of the information contained in or linked to this web site and its associated sites.

If you register with the VIRM website as a ‘registered user’ or become a ‘registered subscriber’ of VIRM the personal information you provide will be used to facilitate your use of the site. E-mail addresses will be used to answer e-mail we receive, and deliver newsletters and other information for registered subscribers.
We will never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones above, without also providing you with an opportunity to decline or prohibit any such unrelated uses.
We will take reasonable steps, in order to protect your privacy and security.
In operation of the VIRM website we only use session “cookies” for administrative purposes. Only during your current session user information is temporarily stored at the server. These cookies are only stored in the memory of your computer for the time you are visiting the VIRM site, and are automatically removed when you close your browser. Cookies by themselves cannot be used by others to find out your identity.
